I enjoyed reading your story. There are some punctuation mistakes I picked up on but other than that it reads quite well. I know you mentioned that you were worried that the language would be too difficult for a children's book, but I think it's appropriate (obviously depending on what age group it is meant for)... it might be a good idea to have a way of indicating intended-audience ages for stories uploaded to the site.
